Michelle sat down with students from the WLU Cultural Studies in Action class to talk about her current exhibition Materialscape, her art making practice and what inspires her.

It has been a great week with installation of Materialscape nearing completion. While preparing for installing and volunteer assistance I have had several opportunities to speak with the media and students. Wednesday’s online and print issue of the Waterloo Chronicle posted Charlotte Prong Parkhill’s article (Paper work) on our interview surrounding Materialscape. Monday morning I had a live interview with Jeremy Smith’s morning radio programming on CKWR, and an blog interview with students of Wilfrid Laurier University. Coming up is the artist’s talk Thursday evening at 7pm and the Opening Reception Friday (both are free). I’m excited and hope that the community volunteers have a chance to attend either event to view their hard work.

Suffice it to say all is going very well and the volunteers have been incredible. I am happy with the process and development of the work and am excited to see it materialize over the next few days.
Materialscape is my 6th installation in the “Office Paper” series and promises to be the most ambitious. Each installation has been predominantly conceived of and produced in-situ with previous exhibitions in Japan, France and Canada ( Mercer Union and the Richmond Art Gallery). Over 20 volunteers from the community and the University of Waterloo have come together for 2 weeks to help prepare the materials which involves rolling and gluing sheet after sheet of printer paper. All this whilst getting to know each other and listening to informative and entertaining podcasts of “This American Life“. This work could not be produced without such amazing and committed help, thus I see this as a truly collective endeavor.
